Artificial intelligence has advanced at a breathtaking pace over the last decade. What used to be programs limited to calculations or repetitive tasks are now systems capable of holding conversations, responding with simulated empathy, and even accompanying people in moments of loneliness. In this new landscape, uncomfortable but necessary questions arise:
Can AI become a kind of digital therapist? Or is it more of a mirage that confuses company with real help?
The answer, as so often, is not so simple.
The promise of AI in mental health
It’s no coincidence that more and more apps offer “emotional assistants” or “therapy chatbots.” The appeal is obvious:
Immediate availability AI has no schedule. It’s there when emotions hit at 3 a.m. and there’s no one else to talk to. That immediacy can be crucial in moments of distress.
A judgment-free space Many people find it hard to open up to a human therapist for fear of being judged. AI, on the other hand, offers an environment where you can speak freely, with the (apparent) safety that there won’t be an awkward reaction.
Accessibility and cost In many countries, psychological therapy remains expensive or limited to a few. An AI application, by comparison, is cheaper or even free. For someone with no other alternative, it can represent a first step toward caring for their mental health.
Organizing thoughts Talking to a system that asks questions, returns phrases or invites reflection can help organize ideas. Sometimes simply putting emotions into words already brings relief.
The obvious limits of an AI “therapist”
Lack of real empathy Although a chatbot may respond with compassionate phrases, it does not feel or understand. The empathy it transmits is an illusion built from language. And for someone in crisis, that can be insufficient or even misleading.
Risk of dependency Using AI as a substitute for professional therapy can create the false sense of being “accompanied.” But in reality, there’s no trained professional guiding the process or therapeutic framework sustaining the change.
Limited interventions AI cannot deeply detect clinical disorders, nor handle serious emergencies like suicidal thoughts. In those cases, human support is irreplaceable.
Privacy and security Conversations with AI are data. And that data, in many cases, is stored and processed for commercial or model-training purposes. What happens to confidentiality, a central principle in psychology?
Support or self-deception?
The big question is whether trusting AI as a therapist is truly useful or whether we’re deceiving ourselves into thinking we’re in a healing process. The key may lie in how it’s used:
As a support tool: it can be a space to vent, reflect or find temporary relief. It can even serve as a complement between real therapy sessions, like a “conversational journal” that helps process emotions.
As a substitute for professional therapy: this is where the risk increases. Relying solely on a chatbot to work through anxiety, depression or deep traumas can end in frustration, dependency or masking problems that require specialized support.
The thin line between company and cure
We could think of AI as an emotional crutch: useful to lean on at certain times, but not designed to walk the whole path of recovery. The problem arises when we confuse that crutch with a definitive solution.
Human therapy is not just conversation: it involves real active listening, intuition, clinical experience, strategies tailored to the person, and above all, a human bond that no machine can replicate.
